Speeding Towards Innovation: The Nord Anglia STEM Festival at Beau Soleil

Last week, we had the honour of hosting this year's vibrant and intellectually stimulating STEM festival that brought together students from seven Nord Anglia schools across Europe (including Beau Soleil). STEM, an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, served as the cornerstone of an event filled with curiosity, innovation, and a spirited competition under the exhilarating theme of 'Need for Speed.'

The festival saw the participation of around 80 students from six different schools, who joined forces with our own Grade 6 and 7 students to dive into a series of challenges and competitive activities. Each task was intricately designed to explore the various facets of the STEM disciplines, all through the exciting lens of speed.

The event kicked off on Monday with students eagerly rolling up their sleeves to design and construct rockets and sledges. The objective was clear: to create a contraption that could launch higher than any other. The day was not just about hands-on engineering but also about learning from experts in the field. In the evening, we had the pleasure of hosting guest speakers from EPFL, one of Switzerland's premier universities, who delivered a fascinating talk about space exploration.

Tuesday morning brought a fresh wave of excitement following an evening of space exploration discussions and thematic "space" snacks. The morning was dedicated to a variety of workshops that catered to a wide array of interests and talents, further emphasizing the diversity within STEM fields. One of the standout sessions was the "F1 in Schools" workshop, where students were challenged to design and build miniature F1 race cars destined for the electric circuit. Alongside, a workshop on natural cosmetics which provided a unique opportunity for students to explore the chemistry behind beauty products. In another workshop they could experiment with long-exposure photography and explore the effects of lighting, each workshop challenged and broadened students' understanding of STEM.

The afternoon brought a new adventure as the students made their way to Frience, a perfect setting to test their meticulously crafted rockets. Amidst the thrill of launching rockets, the students also found joy in the simple pleasure of sledging down the snowy slopes. The day concluded with a communal barbecue feast, allowing everyone to share their experiences and bond over the day's successes (and failures).

Wednesday was a day of reflection and consolidation. Students from each participating school gathered to compile what they had learned throughout the event. They created informative displays that showcased their projects and findings, providing a wealth of knowledge for all attendees. Additionally, some students opted to spend their afternoon enjoying the slopes, taking advantage of the skiing lessons offered by our qualified student instructors.

The festival was more than just a series of competitions and lectures; it was a melting pot of cultures, ideas, and aspirations. It was a privilege to host such a dynamic group of young minds from across Europe and to witness their boundless enthusiasm for STEM. The event underscored the importance of fostering curiosity, encouraging innovation, and promoting collaboration among the next generation of scientists, engineers, and thinkers.

As we bid farewell to our guests and reflect on the week's events, it's clear that the STEM festival at Beau Soleil was not just about understanding the 'Need for Speed' in a literal sense. It was about accelerating our collective journey towards a brighter, more interconnected future.
